ANTIOCH, Contra Costa County — October 27, 2026. A cracked sidewalk in front of a house and stormwater approaching a garage present different maintenance questions. Antioch’s Public Works Department has published practical guidance for both, including a 50/50 sidewalk repair program and a self-service sandbag station for seasonal flood protection.
Who is responsible for sidewalks?
The city says that, under California law and its municipal code, owners generally are responsible for repairing and maintaining sidewalks immediately in front of or adjacent to their property. Antioch’s Capital Improvements Division oversees a 50/50 Sidewalk Program that may help eligible property owners share qualifying repair costs with the city.
That program name does not mean every sidewalk project automatically receives city reimbursement, nor does it promise that a homeowner can choose a contractor and submit any bill afterward. Contact the city before authorizing repairs to confirm how eligibility, inspection, approvals and cost sharing work.
Where to get sandbags
Antioch lists a seasonal self-service sandbag station at its Maintenance Service Center, 1201 West Fourth Street, using the entrance from N Street. Residents should confirm current supply, whether bags or tools are provided, pickup rules and access hours before traveling.
What Public Works maintains
The Street Maintenance Division is responsible for city roadways and rights-of-way, including pothole repairs, street signs, streetlights and removal of roadway hazards. The city notes that requests for traffic calming, such as speed humps, must go through its Traffic Engineering Division rather than being installed by residents.
Where to get answers
For the sidewalk cost-sharing program, Antioch lists the Capital Improvements Division at 925-779-7050 and CIP@antiochca.gov. For general public works concerns and current road services, use the contacts on the city’s website.
